Angela & Mia's story

'FAST brings families who are isolated or from different cultures together, that can only be a good thing'

Angela (38) lives with her daughter Mia (4) in East Manchester, she has an older son Garth (21). Initially Angela heard about FAST through attending a meeting at school and was persuaded to give it a go. 'I thought it would be good to try something new and see if it could benefit my family'. Angela commented that, 'I didn't really know many of the other parents before I started the FAST project, everyone is either in their own small groups or on their own; I saw it as a chance for me to meet new families, spend more time with my daughter and share ideas for activities to do at home'.

How did FAST help?

FAST has increased Angela's confidence and dramatically strengthened her relationship & engagement with school, 'As a direct result of FAST I decided to apply to be a parent governor at school and was successful, I felt really motivated and confident to get more involved, I'm also a volunteer teaching assistant now and help out with Yr 6 class doing Maths, English and Art. I'm even considering training to be a teaching assistant! I've got to know the staff much better - FAST has given us the chance to build relationships that werenít there before'.

FAST has helped raise Mia's self esteem and make new friendships 'Mia was really shy when we first came along to FAST, the activities have helped build her confidence, she has felt more able to mix and play with other children. My parents, who didnít come to FAST noticed how she was more confident in expressing herself at home and her teacher told me she was improving at school too'.
